Summerville, SC – Hannah Solar Government Services (HSGS) was awarded a contract for the U.S. Air Force by way of Wood Solutions just over a year ago. This project is one of two logistically difficult, South Pacific contracts HSGS was awarded, with the second completed last quarter. This project is located on Wake Island, in the Marshall Islands, and consists of a 740-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array and a 571-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) integrated with microgrid controls.
Microgrid energy systems allow the consumer to be completely isolated from a utility grid, typically called “island mode.” However, as a 2.8 square mile coral atoll in the Pacific Ocean, the new microgrid system allows the U.S. Air Force to conduct their activities independently. Before the incorporation of the microgrid system, Wake Island’s facilities and defense assets were solely powered by generators that rely on costly fuel shipped from across the Pacific. On-site energy generation and storage power the U.S. Air Force’s critical facilities without shipped fuel.
Hannah Solar Government Services is a veteran-owned business leading the way in global energy security by designing and building renewable energy and microgrid systems. HSGS specializes in project development, design, installation, and maintenance of commercial and utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage for government, commercial, and utility clients. HSGS’ breadth of experience includes projects that span the continental United States as well as overseas.
