Microgrids
HSGS has designed and built multiple microgrids in the continental United States as well as overseas. Our specialty is designing microgrid systems that integrate existing energy sources with renewable energy as well as advanced energy storage technologies and smart grid capabilities.
How Do Microgrids Work?

A microgrid is an electric power system of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources that act as a single controllable entity in relation to the utility grid. These complex systems are capable of operating in two modes—interactive mode and island mode. When in interactive mode, the microgrid works with multiple energy sources, pulling from them as needed to power loads (devices that consume energy). In the case of utility grid disruptions caused by natural disasters or infrastructure failures, microgrids go into island mode and operate independently from the grid, reconnecting once issues are addressed. Microgrids are ideal options for facilities that are in isolated locations like small islands and private areas.
Benefits of Microgrids
Integrate multiple power sources
Companies and agencies that are connected to the power grid, but also have generators or energy storage systems can benefit from installing microgrid capabilities and integrating other energy sources. Microgrids allow multiple power sources to work seamlessly together.
Provide energy security and resiliency
As microgrids have island mode capabilities, users don’t have to worry about instability caused by outside issues, like utility grid disruptions and outages. Energy is completely isolated, allowing for a continuously reliable supply of power.
Manage Load and Energy Flow
Microgrids allow the user to manage load and the flow of energy consumption, enhances system efficiency, and balances supply and demand, ultimately leading to cost savings and improved reliability in energy systems.
REDUCING COST THROUGH PEAK CHARGES
Smart microgrid controls avoid peak demand charges by shifting energy use to cheaper, renewable, or stored energy sources. In doing this, the microgrid reduces overall energy costs for the user. By providing flexible and resilient energy access, microgrids help reduce downtime costs and protect business continuity with island mode in case of disruptions.
